AUSTIN, Texas - Washington State University will be represented by quartermiler Shawna Fermin next month at the NCAA DI Outdoor Championships in Eugene. Fermin, a senior from Victorville, Calif., will run in the women's 400m dash semifinals the evening of June 5.
In the final day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin, Cougars had strong performances but did not crack into the top 12 that advanced to the national meet.
Sophomore Anna Adamko (Vancouver, Wash.), a 2012 NCAA Championships participant, threw the javelin 154-feet 9 inches (47.17m) for the 13th-best toss out of the first round and advanced to the day's final but did not throw a better distance and finished 14th. Two other Cougars competed in the javelin: Celena Ward (sophomore, Spokane) threw a distance of 140-8 (42.88m) for 31st and Jaclyn Onosko (junior, Kent, Wash.) threw a distance of 125-2 (38.16m) for 47th.
The women's 4x100m relay team of Cindy Robinson, Dominique Keel, Christiana Ekelem and Shawna Fermin ran a time of 45.43 seconds for 18th place while a dropped baton during an exchange ended the men's 4x100m relay race with a team of Greg Hornsby, Trevor Rogers, Brett Blanshan and Andre McBride. At the end of the meet, the women's 4x400m relay team of Bree Winfrey, Ekelem, Fermin and Keel ran a time of 3:39.55 for 21st.
In the men's 1500m race Todd Wakefield (junior, Kearns, Australia) ran a time of 3:50.39 for 20th place. Ruby Roberts (junior, Kingston, Wash.) ran the women's 1500m quarterfinal in a time of 4:40.81 for 24th place. Andrew Kimpel (senior, Spokane) ran a 5000m time of 14:42.73 for 33rd place.
In other field events, men's javelin throwers Sam Ferenchak (sophomore, Vancouver, Wash.) threw 199-3 (60.74m) for 33rd place and Kyle Stevens (junior, Snoqualmie, Wash.) threw 197-6 (60.20m) for 34th place. Tay'lor Eubanks (freshman, Everett, Wash.) triple jumped 48-10 (14.88m) for 34th place in the men's competition and Charlotte Muschamp (Rs-sophomore, Edendale, New Zealand) triple jumped 39-0 1/4 (11.89m) for 41st place in the women's event.
"At this meet we performed the way we've been performing all year but at this level of competition it was not good enough," Cougar Head Coach Rick Sloan said. "We brought 34 qualifiers to this meet and unfortunately we only advanced one to the national meet. But with people like Pac-12 pole vault Kristine Felix, a freshman, and some of the other young people who gained valuable experience here we will improve on this number next year. We have a number of outstanding recruits coming and many are wrapping up their high school careers this weekend with lifetime-best marks. We will be a stronger team next year."
