Anderson Wins Hurdles at Stanford Invitational Meet

STANFORD, Calif. -- Washington State's All-American and defending NCAA intermediate hurdles champion, Jeshua Anderson, won his event and became the national collegiate leader Friday during the first day of the Stanford Invitational Meet at Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Anderson, a junior from Woodland Hills, Calif., won the men's 400m hurdles in a time of 49.64 seconds. This was the first intermediate hurdles race this season for Anderson, the two-time Pac-10 and two-time NCAA intermediate hurdles champion. WSU's J Hopkins (sophomore, Everett) ran a season-best time of 53.75 for seventh and ran a personal-record time in the 110m hurdles of 15.55.

Jono Lafler (redshirt freshman, Maple Valley, Wash.) won his section of the men's 5000m in a PR time of 14:17.58.

Sam Ahlbeck (senior, Renton) ran his initial 3000m steeplechase of the season and equaled his lifetime-best with a time of 8:49.88.

In the 1500m, Lisa Egami (senior, Coquitlam, B.C.) won her section and ran a PR time of 4:19.31, third-best in WSU history. In other sections, Anna Layman (junior, Spokane Valley) ran a time of 4:35.89 and Caroline Austin (freshman, Chehalis) clocked in at 4:38.89. David Hickerson (sophomore, Spokane) sliced six seconds off his 1500m time running a PR time of 3:50.58.

Freshman Brett Blanshan (Selah) finished sixth in the men's 100m dash with a final time of 10.85 after running a time of 10.83 in the prelims. In the men's 400m dash, Ryan Barrett (junior, Graham, Wash.) ran the top Cougar time at 49.50, followed by André Jennings (junior, Spokane) with a PR time of 49.76, Reny Follett (senior, Lewiston) in 50.67 and Wesley McCann (freshman, Puyallup) in 51.24.

Shaquana Logan (freshman, Tacoma) ran the women's 100m hurdles in a season-best time of 14.25 and long jumped a PR leap of 18-10 3/4 (5.76m).

Notable field events performances by Washington State competitors included Ryan Deese (junior, Colorado Springs) who cleared the high jump bar at 6-8 1/4 (2.04m) and Ross VanZanten (freshman, Longview) cleared a height of 6-4 1/4 (1.94m). In the women's high jump, Holly Parent (freshman, Victoria, B.C.) leaped 5-9 1/4 (1.76m) while Christine Rice (freshman, Ridgefield), Maria Creech (sophomore, Durango, Colo.) and Amanda Stewart (sophomore, Federal Way) all reached season-bests at 5-5 1/4 (1.66m).

Two Cougars, Dan Geib and Justin Englund, will run in the men's 10,000m races during the Distance Carnival Friday night, with an expected finish time after 11 p.m. Their results will be reported in the Saturday recap of the Cougars at the Stanford Invitational. The meet continues Saturday, March 27, at 9 a.m.
