Jensen Wins Pentathlon at Cougar Indoor Track Meet First Day

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State junior Angela Jensen won the women's pentathlon and freshman Stephan Scott-Ellis won the men's long jump Friday at the Cougar Indoor Invitational, a two-day, seven-team scoring meet held at WSU's Indoor Track Facility.

Jensen (Tacoma) won the pentathlon with a personal-best of 3,525 points. She opened with a 60m hurdles PR time of 8.60 seconds, high jumped 5-feet, 2 1/2 inches (1.59m) and threw the shot put 32-0 3/4 (9.77m). Jensen equaled her best long jump at 17-1 1/2 (5.22m) and ran the 800m in a time of 2:32.66. Montana's Lindsey Hall was second among the 16 competitors with 3,459 points. WSU freshman Jasmine Johnson-McKeown (San Bernardino, Calif.) finished sixth with 3,161 points. Johnson-McKeown ran the 60m hurdles in a time of 9.66, high jumped 5-0 1/4 (1.53m), threw the shot put 38-0 (11.58m), long jumped 16- 2 1/2 (4.94m) and ran the 800m in a time of 2:41.77.

Stephan Scott-Ellis (Tacoma) won the men's long jump with his final leap of the night measuring 24-3 1/2 (7.40m). Cougar All-American high jumper Trent Arrivey (senior, Woodinville) finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 21-10 3/4 (6.67m).

Cougar freshman Ramsey Hopkins (San Diego, Calif.) leaped into first place in the men's heptathlon with 2,821 points after clearing 6-7 (2.01m) in the high jump at the end of the first day. Hopkins opened the 16-man competition with a 60m dash time of 7.43, long jumped 22-3 3/4 (6.80m), and threw the shot put 33-10 1/4 (10.32m). WSU senior Kyle Schauble (Kennewick) is in third place with a first day total of 2,686 points. He ran a PR time in the 60m dash of 7.08 seconds, long jumped 21-10 (6.65m), threw the shot put a PR of 36- 2 1/4 (11.03m), and high jumped 5-7 1/4 (1.71m). WSU sophomore Sean Harris (Kent, Wash.) is in seventh place in the heptathlon after the first four events with 2,614 points. Harris ran the 60m dash in a PR time of 7.42, long jumped 19-6 3/4 (5.96m), threw the shot put 40-0 (12.19m), and cleared 6-1 1/4 (1.86m) in the high jump.

A total of four field events finals were contested Friday night. Idaho's Lucas Pope won the men's pole vault with a school record, meet record and NCAA Provisional Qualifying height of 17-3 1/2 (5.27m). Pope broke WSU All-American Tyson Byers' meet record of 17-2 3/4 (5.25m) set in 2007. Other Cougar placers in the pole vault included freshman John Brenteson (Vancouver, Wash.), fifth at 15-9 (4.80m), Jake Baertlein (redshirt freshman, Portland, Ore.) and Trevor Sodorff (redshirt sophomore, Woodinville, Wash.) both cleared 15-3 (4.65m) for fifth and seventh respectively, and freshman Adam Neace (Walla Walla) cleared 14-9 (4.50m) for 11th place. Ben Wood, Idaho, won the men's weight throw with a toss of 59-9 (18.21m). Nicole Luckenbach, Eastern Washington, won the women's weight throw with a toss of 58-2 1/2 (17.74m). WSU's Cassie Whitfield (sophomore, Spanaway) was second with a throw of 57-0 3/4 (17.39m) and Kjirsten Jensen (Arlington) finished third with a throw of 54-3 1/4 (16.54m).

The meet continues Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in the WSU Indoor Facility. Admission is free.
