WALNUT, Calif. -- Washington State's Marissa Tschida threw the javelin a school-record distance of 175-feet, 11-inches (53.63m) Friday at the 51st Annual Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif.

Tschida (pronounced chee-tah), a sophomore from Missoula, Mont., was the top collegian but finished second in the women's university/open javelin, an elite field that included several recent Olympians. Her 175-11 toss is an improved NCAA Regional Qualifying mark by over 10 1/2 feet. Tschida shattered the WSU women's record of 169-7 (51.70m) thrown by Jenna Dean in 2005. WSU's Courtney Kirkwood threw the javelin 138-10 (42.33m) for 17th in the same section.

"I knew I could throw over 51 meters and I did it at this meet," Tschida said. "I think I have a better understanding of my form this year. Coach (Deb Farwell) and I are getting on a similar page for what she tells me to do. I understand the technical terms more and I understand exactly what she is trying to get me to do. I can maneuver my body and get it into position. This isn't my final PR."

Reny Follett (junior, Lewiston, Idaho) won the men's university/open 400m dash in a season-best time of 47.48 seconds.

Also on the track, Lisa Egami (junior, Coquitlam, B.C.) finished second and ran an NCAA RQ time in the women's Olympic Development 1500m of 4:22.61, just off her Stanford Invite time of 4:22.57. Joe Abbott (freshman, Reno) ran the 800m in a season-best time of 1:51.70 for 13th.

Princess Joy Griffey ran a season-best 100m dash time of 11.90 for sixth and finished seventh in the 200m dash with a season-best time of 24.01w. Brittnay Crabb ran the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.86 (21st). In the women's 400m hurdles, Crabb ran a season-best 1:01.91 for 12th, Veronica Elseroad-Wall finished in a time of 1:02.96 (19th), and Caroline Hedel ran a time of 1:04.70 (24th). In the men's intermediate hurdles race, J Hopkins was 11th in a time of 53.83.

In field events, Joe Bartlett (freshman, Reno) finished second in the men's shot put with a toss of 54-9 1/2 (16.70m), just 3 inches off the NCAA RQ standard. Male high jumpers competing Friday were Shawn Swartz, who cleared 6-8 3/4 (2.05m), and Ryan Deese, who cleared 6-6 3/4 (2.00m). Maria Creech high jumped 5-5 (1.65m) for 11th in the women's section.

Beau Carrillo cleared 15-7 (4.75m) in the men's pole vault to tie for seventh while Jake Baertlein did not clear a bar. In the women's pole vault, Hilary Moore equaled her lifetime-best clearing 12-1 1/2 (3.70m) to tie for seventh in one section and Alexa Huestis cleared 12-1 1/2 (3.70m) to tie for eighth in another section.

Christian Crane long jumped a season-best 23-0 3/4 (7.03m) for seventh place. Sean Wilson triple jumped 45-4 1/2 (13.83m) for 17th in his section. Candace Missouri long jumped a season-best distance of 18-9 (5.71m) for fifth place.

Isley Gonzalez (senior, Sunnyside) ran a PR and improved NCAA RQ time in the 5000m of 16:18.04 for sixth place in the women's Olympic Development race. Michelly Foley ran the university/open 5k race and reached a PR and NCAA RQ time of 16:43.74, finishing in ninth place. Gonzalez' time is the second-best 5k time in WSU women's history while Foley's time is the seventh-best 5k time in Cougar all-time records.
