SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Cougar women's soccer team took their fourth win Sunday, a 2-1 decision over San Jose State University. Freshman Mariette Boyce (West Linn, Ore.) was the hero of the game putting both goals in the back of the net for her first collegiate points.
After a scoreless first half, WSU came out ready to finish. Boyce's first goal was a 35-yard shot into the upper corner of the net off a ball played back in the 68th minute. Only six minutes later the Cougars were awarded a free kick, which Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.) put into the box for Boyce to head in.
"I felt like we controlled the run of play, in the first half especially" head coach Dan Tobias said. "In the last 15 minutes of the game San Jose State did a good job of putting the pressure on. We kind of bent defensively, but we didn't break."
The Trojans did come back to take away goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen's (North Bend, Wash.) hope for a shutout with a retaliation goal 30 seconds later.
"The win was a good way to finish up our trip and the players are looking forward to coming home and playing," Tobias said, "especially with homecoming this weekend."
The Cougs open home play Friday afternoon against Gonzaga at 3:00 p.m. PT.
